about

Since their meeting in The Hague in the Netherlands in 2002, Alexandra Grimal and Giovanni di Domenico have been playing together regularly. Since 2011 they have been offering several subtle and inspired tête-à-têtes: Ghibli, Chergui and Down The Hill, which was released on January 19th, 2020.
Ghibli, around a repertoire composed by the Italian pianist, released on the Sans Bruit label in 2011, the music navigates on the mineral lines of Alexandra Grimal's saxophones that come to rest and intertwine with the surprisingly deep and beautiful piano playing of Giovanni du Domenico, constantly opening new listening paths.
Chergui, a double album released by Ayler Records in 2014, compositions by both artists. Here they offer a sophisticated "chamber" jazz that yet seems to flow so naturally, where they find themselves in the dreamlike meanders of their dialogues...between writing and improvisation, to retain only the emotion of the moment.
In this new album, Down The Hill, the dialogue between the two musicians continues around improvised folk themes where Alexandra's voice is added to the soprano saxophone, widening the timbres and the paths of exploration.
Recorded by Céline Grangey on nov. 16th/17th 2017 in the Vitez room of the Scène Nationale d'Orléans. Mixed and Mastered in 2019 by Céline Grangey. Cover photo and English texts by Alexandra Grimal, Italian text by Goffredo Murathia.

Extraits de presse :

élu Citizen Jazz - 4 étoiles Jazzmagazine

"A sublime duo" Maurice Hogue, All About Jazz New York

"A volte gli incontri generano equilibri perfetti, punti di vista comuni, dialoghi spontanei. E’ questo il caso dell’incontro tra il sassofono soprano della Grimal e il pianoforte di Di Domenico."
"Rimane una sensazione enigmatica alla fine dell’ascolto, qualcosa di magico e di meravigliosamente semplice è accaduto." Nicola Bari, Percorsi Musicali

"Beautifully fragile and occasionally plaintive
record.(...) Down The Hill is an unhurried effort, even when
sprinting." Kurt Gottschalk, The New York City Jazz Records

"down the hill est un velours, un temps suspendu où l'on échappe à la pesanteur (...) down the hill est un souffle de liberté" Franpi Barriaux, Citizen Jazz

"Tout est limpide, coule de source, tendresse, tranquillité. Le duo se partage les compositions, échappe aux étiquettes, ils planent." Jean-Jacques Birgé, Mediapart

"Impressionismus à la Debussy all over. Wasserläufe im Klavier, Flügelschlagen heimischer Vögel im Sax." Susanne Müller, Jazz Podium

« The music has a rare sense of innocence that is sincere, charming as well as convincing. Next to her excellent work on soprano, Grimal treats us to her wordless singing which even accentuates the overall atmosphere of clarity and sensitivity. » Stef Gijssels, The Free Jazz Collective

"Twaalf lyrische polaroidshots die aansluiten bij de bucolische hoesfoto (...) De minimalistische vocale ontladingen van Grimal verlenen het geheel een mystiek karakter." Georges Tonla Briquet, jazz halo
